The City of Norwalk utilizes a 4-acre civic lawn to host a
diverse calendar of outdoor events throughout the year including a summer
carnival and concert series, Halloween festival, holiday tree lighting, New
Year’s celebration, and more. With the
pending redevelopment of the civic lawn area the city needed alternate
locations to stage these numerous events.
Keeping community events close to the civic center was preferred, so
EDGEland researched options that activated the adjacent public streets and
right of way to find flexible solutions that can adapt to this diverse public
events program.
EDGEland developed multiple options in which portions of the
adjacent streets were closed and others were left partially open to maintain
access to adjacent businesses.
Additional studies looked at utilizing the civic center property to
maintain open streets and minimize disturbances to adjacent property owners. Program areas were carefully choreographed
throughout the event space to ensure an open circulation flow promoted exploration
and shared experiences that help build a sense of community.
