At EDGEland we are intrigued with the intersection of nature and the urban condition – where infrastructure, density, culture, and the environment overlap. This confluence reminds us of edge conditions found in nature where the intersection of habitats create moments of intense biodiversity. Just as in nature, these areas are typically the most interesting parts of our cities, moments of unique experiences shared by diverse groups of people/communities.

To create unique and authentic experiences our practice strongly believes that early collaboration with clients, communities, and consultants yields the best designs.  During the initial stages of our projects, we research background information and conduct site analysis to gain a thorough understanding of the Client and stakeholder needs.  We then synthesize this information and provide multiple solutions for discussion with the team.  In our experience we believe this is critical in ensuring a successful project.  Once a preferred solution is selected, we work with the team to develop the design and ensure the project is delivered on time and on budget.  With over 25 years of experience, we are proud in the consistency between the vision expressed in our early designs and the quality of our built work.

We are deeply committed to sustainable designs that conserve energy and water resources.  Many of our projects have featured green roofs, water storage and reclamation systems, and drought tolerant landscapes.  By using thoughtful strategies that are inherent to the overall design concept, our expertise and approach delivers final projects that save natural resources, reduces maintenance, and delivers cohesive designs that will thrive for future generations.

KEVIN SLAWSON, FOUNDING PRINCIPAL

Kevin has been pursuing a collaborative and design driven approach for over 25 years of professional experience in Landscape Architecture, Planning, and Urban Design. He is fueled by the challenge of working on complex urban infill sites where project constraints can be seemingly overwhelming, as these are the moments where problem solving and innovation lead to authentic and unique designs. Kevin believes that good design should be equitable and not constrained to just projects with high budgets.  Through research and a strong community connection he believes design can be impactful, and provide solutions for real problems facing communities today. Kevin graduated from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design with a Master in Landscape Architecture, and received his Bachelors of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona.  His experience working in 7 countries and throughout the United States has focused on connecting people through design and the environment, and continues to guide his research, teaching, and professional work.
